The big question in any interviewee’s mind is “What are managers looking for during a job interview?”
This is a very hard question to answer for every other interviewer because each of them have different expectations in a candidate.
Listed below are six qualities that generally make a good interview candidate:
1. Self Confidence – Candidates must be sure of what they are doing, and to show this one must answer questions articulately while stating facts as they are. This will involve saying no to something you do not know. A candidate with low self confidence will run into situations where he won’t take risks or make “the tough calls” just because he is afraid of being wrong.
2. Common Sense – Many at times, candidates need to make decisions based on incomplete pieces of information and the only way to succeed in this task is by having a good level of intelligence and common sense. Every candidate does not need to be a genius (it won’t hurt either), but the candidate needs to at least display the ability to think and reach conclusions even when he doesn’t have all the data in his hands by extrapolating and “tying loose ends” in order to draw for himself a clearer and bigger picture.
3. Communication Skills – This is a must for most jobs. Good communication is the ability to explain and communicate an idea to someone who is not in your immediate working context. This is even more imperative of a candidate who needs to explain non-trivial things like tests, and even potential risks related to the technical tasks they can perform to people that will need to make important decisions based on these explanations.
4. Knowledge (basic or advanced) of his subject - If you want to be a good candidate make sure to understand what an interview is about (at least in theory!!!). Today there is no excuse for not having some idea about the principles surrounding interviews since everything (literally everything!) can be found on the Internet by doing a quick Google search.
5. Some Knowledge of the Company they are Interviewing for – As an HR executive, it may sound strange but you always want to know the person in front of you is curious enough to learn (even a little) about the company they are interviewing for. In the mind of an interviewer anyone who comes to a company without knowing their basic business is not interested enough in order to get the job at hand.
6. Truthfulness – This last one is maybe the most important one, an HR executive needs to trust the person in front of him/her. If during the interview he reaches a conclusion that you are making things up and lying just to please him then he won’t be able to trust you in the future.
HR will always be willing to compromise on some of the other attributes as long as they feel the person in front of them will be able to fill the gaps by investing his time and efforts, but if someone is not truthful then they won’t be able to trust him or his work.
Lastly, and to make sure you have the whole picture, there are always extra-points for technical knowledge in the field in question, and this may even be a requisite if they are looking for an expert in a specific field but most of the times this is one of the attributes with less weight in any interviews.

Shock as man rapes woman on moving bus
Police in Brazil are looking for a man who raped a woman on a moving Rio de Janeiro bus.
Witnesses say the armed man ran away after a busing the woman for about 30 minutes, and robbing other passengers.
The crime has shocked the country, becoming a topic of discussion on social media.
The rape of a tourist in late March had already raised concerns about security ahead of the football World Cup next year and the Olympics in 2016.
Days later, seven people died as a packed bus crashed off a bridge following an alleged argument between the driver and a passenger.
After these episodes, Rio de Janeiro's mayor, Eduardo Paes, vowed to tighten security and checks on public transport.
'On drugs'
But Friday afternoon's attack comes as a fresh blow, correspondents say.
Witnesses told the authorities the assailant took a group of about 10 passengers to the front of the vehicle, telling the driver to keep on driving.
After taking their belongings, the man is said to have hit a 30-year-old woman with his gun before raping her.
The man, who witnesses said appeared to be under the influence of drugs, then got off the bus and ran across a busy motorway.
Video footage of the bus is being analysed and a sketch of the suspect is being drawn up, police said.
Robberies are common on buses in Rio de Janeiro and other Brazilian cities but the violence and audacity of these attacks has shocked local media.
Curbing violence is a major priority for city authorities ahead of the major global sporting events.

Village thrown into panic after ‘talking stone’ cracks
Vihiga, Kenya: For the Maragoli community, ‘Imbinga’ (the shrine) is a sacred place so revered that only few and specific people would be allowed to set foot there.
This was a small cave walled by huge boulders and it is here where prayers and sacrifices would be offered for the community.
And so when the mystic stone of Imbinga began to crack in the night at the weekend, terror struck. This, to locals, is a mystery and only their ancestral spirits could tell what had gone wrong.
On Friday evening at around 11pm, a huge boulder cracked and rolled down causing great damage of property and minor injuries to those living near it. The stone came crashing down at a house owned by Mzee Peter Edambo Lugaria, 64, in an event that shocked everyone.
“I have lived here all my life and I have never seen events of this kind. We have watched these stones ever since we were young but that they would one day come down is something that we have never thought of,” says a shaken Mzee Lugaria of Kituru location.
“Long ago, underneath the caves, our fathers used to offer prayers to ancestral spirits. We are wondering if the ancestral spirits have turned against us.”
The scary experience has got several people living under the mystic stones thinking and some have started fleeing their homes for safety.
Lugaria’s wife Jane, broke her left arm as she scampered for safety and her chilling story indicated that authorities were aware that this would happen.
Chief’s warning
“I own the house that was smashed but on the fateful night I had sought housing at a relative nearby and when the stone started coming down I went out and saw everything,” said Jane.
According to her narration, a strange sound started emanating from the rocks since the onset of April and as days went by, the sound became even louder.
“The area chief toured this place and warned us of the awaiting calamity and we heeded his pleas and that is why we left the house which is adjacent to the rock,” she continued.
Another witness Mzee Zaphan Luyara said, “The events happened in a span of minutes. It is very chilling to me whenever the thoughts replay in my mind.”
News of the cracking of the ‘sacred stone’ has spread in Sabatia and Vihiga County and beyond like bush fire. When The Standard team visited the site they encountered residents streaming there in large numbers to witness what they described as ‘wonders of the world’.
“I have been receiving telephone calls from people as far as Nairobi and Mombasa inquiring about the incident,” said area chief John Kidali. “But it is confusing because the callers have different versions of the same story.”
“Some called and asked whether what they have heard — that a stone in my location is talking — is true, while others claimed the stone dropped from the skies and started making quire voices,” he added.
Calls for vigilance
He also said he has been hosting various visitors including media practitioners since the incident happened. However, the chief called for calm and asked villagers to remain vigilant and report any strange happening.
The affected family now appeals for Government assistance to help them relocate from the area.
“This is where we were born. We have no other place to go and if the Government can relocate us, we shall be grateful,” said Mzee Lugaria.
Heavy boulders planted on high grounds is a characteristic phenomenon in most parts of the Western region and one particular stone famous with locals and visitors is the mystic ‘ Crying Stone of Ilesi’ in Kakamega County

Police arrest suspected al-Shabaab terrorists
The Inspector General of Police, Lt. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has said that the Force have arrested suspected terrorists who wanted to carry out terror attacks in Uganda.
Gen. Kayihura, who declined to give details of the number of the arrested suspected terrorists and their nationalities, said detectives are interrogating them. “The terror is real and people shouldn’t take it lightly. We got intelligence reports that there is a cell of al-Shabaab terrorists who want to attack Uganda and Burundi. But we have made some arrests and our officers are interrogating them,” Gen. Kayihura said yesterday. He made the revelation at the opening of the 15th council for the Eastern Africa Police Chiefs Cooperation (EAPCCO) aimed at combating terrorism in Kampala.
The EAPCCO comprises 12 countries, including Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Eritrea, Somalia, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Sudan, Comoros, Seychelles, Rwanda, Burundi and Madagascar. His statements comes a day after suspected terrorists carried out attacks in Arusha, Tanzania and Somalia’s capital Mogadishu. At least a dozen people were killed in the twin bombings in Somalia while one person and several others were injured in a blast in Arusha, Tanzania on Sunday.
Police say al-Shabaab insurgents want to attack Uganda and Burundi in retaliation for their participation in an Africa Union-led peacekeeping mission in a war-torn Somalia. Gen. Kayihura said there is need of concerted effort in the region to fight terrorism in the region. “Terrorism has no boundaries and the groups that want to cause havoc are operating in the entire region so we need to cooperate that is why we are carrying out joint field exercises,” he said.
The Minister of Internal Affairs, Eng. Hillary Onek, said efforts by the police chiefs must be backed by political will. “Indeed without the political will of the various member states, it is very difficult to make a breakthrough in the realisation of our objectives. Definitely, because of your unwavering support, we have been able to make strides on our journey,” Eng. Onek told EAPCCO police chiefs.
