4 Tricks That Captures HR Manager’s Attention

And keeping off trivial but costly elimination traps at the same time catching the attention of the recruitment team remains a priority.

“Most people mistake cover letters for a replica of the curriculum vitae,” Caroline Mwangi, HR Crown Beverages points out. “Unlike the CV, it should be a brief and straight-to-the-point letter. It is your selling point and make sure as you market yourself, highlight your achievements and experience as you tread alongside the specifications in the job advertisement,” she says.

Here are some of the first glance details that get the HR’s attention to your cover letter and move you to the next stage.

1. Appealing Outlook

cover letterThis must have been one of the most drummed-about skills in language lessons throughout all levels of schooling. The appearance of your letter matters and yes the Human Resource are doing the same thing; judging you based on the aesthetics of the material in your cover letter. “Matters to do with format are very important given that HRs receive so many applications to deal with. Add that to the limited time needed to shortlist the candidates, you can see how looking at the appearance of the letter plays an important role in determining whether you’ll be shortlisted for the interview or not,” says Ms. Flora Otieno, HR Manager Kenatco Taxis.

2. Be Brief
Long narratives are good for essays but the HR wants something he or she feels can be read in the shortest time possible. “Three paragraphs should be enough,” says Ms. Mwangi. “Do not be too wordy; say where you’ve worked and in what setup and briefly outline your expertise.”

According to Ms June Njoroge, career advisor, Corporate Staffing Services, your cover letter should have the first introductory paragraph saying who you are; the second outlining your knowledge and skills; and the third your competence and personal traits. “The last paragraph should ideally be dedicated to signing off,” she says.

3. Mirror the Job Advert
“Your letter should show that you understood the role you are applying for even before you applied for the job,” says Liza Shaka, HR Manager Monarch Insurance. “For entry level jobs for example, in the insurance sector, stating that you did a B.com in Insurance will grab my attention as a possible candidate and possibly forward it to the person doing the short listing. Other jobs will detail specific skills needed in the advertisement and being able to bring that out clearly in the cover letter will give you preference over another person who did not.”

“We often skim through the cover letter,” adds Ms Caroline Mwangi.  It need not be very detailed but we often search for key words. Where do you pick them from? The job advertisement will give you those keywords. Use them to your advantage and the HR upon seeing them will wish to see what’s in your CV thereafter.”

4. Smart Choice of words
You must have heard the phrase “having a way with words” and even in writing, this skill does not go unnoticed by the HR’s eyes. According to Ms. Flora Otieno, language and choice of words plays an integral role in the HR’s decision to shortlist a candidate. “For example, someone who writes in a clear, precise manner and includes words like: young, energetic, team leader, motivate, will definitely rate higher than another who doesn’t.”

Job Interviews

When you are looking for a job, one of the most important things you can do is make a positive impact at your first interview.

Landing a job interview invitation in itself is a cause for celebration, but this does not a guarantee you the job offer. Many job seekers will tell you they always attend interviews and will never get hired or even hear from the employers.

The trick in passing any job interview is interviews is preparation, impression and standing out among other candidates. You still have to go in there and impress them. If you make a good first impression, then the rest of the interview might also go well; however, if you don’t make a good first impression, then you will spend the rest of the interview trying to make up for your mistakes.

Standing out in an interview session takes careful planning. Your personality doesn’t matter so much: whether you are shy, reserved, scared, nervous, confident, or outgoing. There is an art to making an impression during any face to face interaction that will create a lasting impact.

Good interview preparation projects you as a poised and confident person to the employer. It is therefore important to prepare well and practice the answers to common interview questions, as well as what you will dress in.

Corporate Staffing Services offers job interview preparation focusing on making an impact in interviews: body language, presentation, responses to tough interview questions, salary and questions to ask employers among others.

CV Writing Tips: How To Deal With Unemployment Gaps

Being unemployed is tough and accounting for those spells out of work is even tougher. Moreover, extended periods of unemployment make the situation even harder for one to land a new job.

As David Muriithi, HR Manager Transport and Lifting Limited points out, “Over six months of unaccounted for time in your CV is a matter of concern. It might not be a very big deal if it happens within a year but if that transcends to another year, it raises a lot of questions,” he says. Interestingly, his views happen to be a shared worldwide concern.

Last year in an attempt to get to the bottom of this phenomenon, Rand Ghayad, a PhD Economics student at the Northeastern University in the United States sent out 4,800 computer-generated CVs to random companies. They were all identical in terms of credentials and working experience—only that some had unemployment durations of more than six months while some had less.

Mr. Ghayad discovered that applications with more than six months out of unemployment were hardly contacted by employers. His conclusion: employers were basically screening out workers with long-term unemployment (www.randghayad.com).  This might not be the exact scenario here but it couldn’t be far-fetched either. The bottom line, it seems, the more you stay out of employment, the less likely you are to get another job no matter your working experience.

Sample IT CVWell, you have been out of work for a long time, how then do you beat this jinx? June Njoroge, career advisor with Corporate Staffing Services sheds light on how to seal these gaps. “One of the best reasons that can account for these gaps might be taking a course as a means of advancing your career. This will suggest that you are a serious person who was doing something to sharpen your skills,” she says.

“Another reason that people account for gaps in their CVs is taking a career break. The main point here is; there shouldn’t be any gaps in the resume at all. Other people prefer to state they were out running private businesses,” continues Ms Njoroge, “but the downside of this argument is that you may be viewed by the prospective employer that you are basically looking for capital to go back to your business.”  The best way to get over this if asked, she suggests, is to state you have delegated the running of your enterprises to other people. Here, in Ms Njoroge’s opinion, you will be avoiding being penalised for conflict of interest.

“You must strive to prove in your CV that you are never an idle person,” rejoins Mr. Muriithi. “Even if you weren’t engaged in big things like contracts when you were out of employment, you must have engaged in minor activities and opportunities that opened up your mind to greater ides—list them. You have to come out as someone who is good material. Being on maternity breaks or raising a family as an explanation might work for women as it is a norm but that is a fairly personal concern.”

Mr. Muriithi states that for most employers, stating you were in jail to account for gaps in your CV are a complete turn-off, except in the rarest of circumstances. “In a nutshell,” he says, “as one prepares a comprehensive CV, he should put himself in the shoes of the employer to get a better overview. If you insist on thinking as an employee regarding your CV then you will only be doing yourself an injustice, let another person help you go through the CV.”

The best way to plug the gaps in your CV, Mr. Muriithi says, is getting a mature person, possibly a businessman, to evaluate your CV and raise questions about it. “That way, he will be able to point out periods of time that need to be accounted for from the employer’s perspective and you will be able to come out with a stronger CV and a better overview of your employment record.”
